Three Common Misconceptions About SEO

In my time as an SEO executive I have seen some truly awful websites. Don’t get me wrong, most of the time they look great on the surface but once you dig a little deeper various issues start emerging. SEO has continued to grow in popularity and many people are slowly realising how beneficial it can be, but not everyone is aware that it even exists. I can’t tell you how many times I found myself having a conversation with a website owner when they would suddenly turn to me and say “What’s SEO?”

The truth of the matter is that a great number of website owners still have no idea that SEO even exists, and with the number of misconceptions about SEO out there it can be difficult for people to separate the truth from fiction. Whether you’re a blogger or a business owner, here’s a few tips that can help you better understand the world of SEO and get you started on your journey towards better rankings.

“SEO is dead!”

There is a common misconception about SEO being dead. This is completely untrue. Yes, SEO is not what it used to be a few years ago and many of the practices have changed but for the most part, SEO is still going strong. Our very own SEO expert, Charlie Whitworth, recently wrote a piece proving that SEO is not dead. If you ever thought about investing in SEO but changed your mind because you’ve read somewhere that SEO was dead, now is the time to reconsider.

“SEO is not for me!”

I have heard website owners say to me in the past that SEO wasn’t for them. What they didn’t realise at the time was that they were already involved with SEO. Everything from content to linkbuilding is all part of SEO. It isn’t all just the technical stuff, which is a common misconception that people have. The truth is that your website is most likely already optimised in some ways. For example most websites these days are mobile-friendly or responsive, which is crucial when it comes to SEO and will help improve your rankings.

“SEO is a scam!”

It’s shocking how many people still believe that SEO is a scam. They think that all SEO agencies are con-artists, taking money from people without really making a difference. That is completely false. The truth is that you will most likely encounter a few shady SEO agencies promising you amazing results in no time. You should stay as far away from these as possible. They can do some real damage to your website so it’s very important to do your research before you sign any contracts. Case studies and testimonials are a great way of finding out whether an agency is trustworthy.
