It’s that time of year again when thousands (32,396 according to official figures) of courageous commuters leave the car in the drive and dust off their trusty two-wheeler in honour of Cycle to Work Day – an annual event aimed at promoting good old fashioned pedal power.

Banc Media were among 869 employers across the UK to pledge their support for 2015’s event, with five members of the team pedalling their way across Greater Manchester during the city’s perilous rush hour. In total, the team covered a respectable 90.44 miles between them; three cheers for Matt (Banc’s current yellow jersey holder), Nadia, Neil, Jonathan and Charlie.

Cycle to Work Day was created with one simple mission: to promote cycling and encourage everyone to pedal to work at least once a year. Currently, census data shows that 760,000 people regularly commute by bike – a figure the campaign hopes will hit 1 million by 2021.

Aside from having several health and fitness benefits, cycling to work could help you save thousands in commuting costs, not to mention shave a sizeable chunk from annual CO2 emissions. It’s also fun and refreshing, and means you’ll never have to sit in a jam again.

Not only that, but if your boss wants you to get home in one piece, they’re contractually obliged to order pizza at lunch to ensure you have ample energy to pedal home – as was the case with today’s doughy haul.
