All around the country this morning, dutiful workers left the car keys on the hook and dusted off the old Raleigh bike for Cycle to Work day. At Banc Media, we hope you all overcame any wobbly starts and made it into work safe and sound.
Three of our team participated in the most magical day of the year and cycled to work with round trips totalling 56.2 miles. So congratulations to Neil, Nadia and Matt (who keeps stressing the fact he cycles to work every day) for leaving the car at home and burning 1,741 calories between them in the process.
Cycle to Work day is the initiative championed by multi gold medal winning Paralympic cyclist, Dame Sarah Storey, developed to encourage more people to cycle to work every day. Roughly 760,000 people in the UK (claim to) cycle to work at the moment and the number is continuing to grow.
As well as being a great way to burn calories, cycling to work can help people save money and the environment – cutting Co2 emissions significantly.
Here’s what our three cycling heroes had to say about the day:
“Cycle to work day gives us an excellent excuse to ditch the car or public transport for the day. There’s been a real buzz around the office as more people have made the effort to get out and about on two wheels. The feedback from colleagues has been fantastic. We’ve enjoyed keeping up to speed on social media to see what people around the country have been doing today and the effort they have put in.
“What better way to start the day than a bit of exercise in the fresh air. Whether it be 5 miles or 50 miles. Let’s have a cycle to work day more often!”
Neil dressing the part for Cycle to Work day.
“I was worried that it was going to rain, but thankfully the sun was shining and I had a lovely bike ride in (apart from the car driver who tried to take me out at a junction – thank you!) Felt really great afterwards and I’m telling myself that this will be the start of a regular cycle into work. Watch this space…”
“Every day is cycle to work day for a lot of people including myself. It’s nice to see people making the effort on a designated day. You’re saving the environment, money & improving your health. Stop making excuses and get on yer bike.”
Matt rolling in like a boss.
… and here are some of the best excuses from the non-cycling members of the Banc Media team:
“I don’t own a bike.”
“Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. After trying to pimp my bike for Cycle to Work day, my front wheel came off mid ride. I haven’t been the same since.”
“My bike is slumbering peacefully in Valhalla with Cthulhu.”
“I have to head straight out to London on business. Any other day and I would have been in my lycras.”
“I didn’t fancy the 80 miles roundtrip over the Pennines.”
Banc Night Out
In other news, it’s the tri-annual (roughly) Banc Media bowling night out tonight. With four new members of the team, the competition will be fiercer than ever. Be sure to check our Twitter feed tomorrow for pictures of a gloating champ and tearful losers, if we’re all still mates by then.
I can’t remember who won last time though…
